An Army Bomb Disposal Team rendered safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Carrickmines late yesterday evening.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team in response to a request from An Garda Síochána after a suspect device was found at a private residence in the Ballyogan area of Carrickmines.

A cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety, while a number of nearby houses were evacuated.

The team arrived on scene at 10 pm. The device was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion and was brought to a safe military location for further examination. All component parts and evidence will be handed over to the Gardaí to assist them with their investigation into the incident.

The scene was declared safe at 10.50 pm.

Other types of call outs would include conventional munition destruction such as old grenades discovered by members of the public, unstable chemicals and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
