03 October 2013 - Army Bomb Disposal Team Render Viable Improvised Explosive Device.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team rendered safe a viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Longford in the early hours of this morning.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team in response to a request from An Garda Sí­ochána after a suspect device was found near a private residence in Lisfarrell, Co Longford. Road closures were put in place for public safety.

The team arrived on scene at 11.40 pm. After an initial assessment, the device was confirmed as viable and was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe at 1.50 am.

All component parts and evidence were handed over to the Gardaí­ to assist them with their investigation into the incident.
