Saturday 17 Jun 2017 - LÉ Eithne Rescue Operation Update .

Yesterday, following a request from the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre, LÉ Eithne located and rescued migrants from five inflatable craft approx 83Km off the North West coast of Tripoli.

Once LÉ Eithne arrived on scene, she was designated the on scene coordinator for a large scale rescue operation involving three NGO ships and ten platforms in distress (PIDs).

The rescue operation took place throughout the day, as well as migrants being transferred from two NGO vessels to LÉ Eithne, where she completed operations with 703* migrants on board.

The migrants on board received food water and medical treatment where required.
 
LÉ Eithne are now tasked by the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre to move the migrants to the designated ‘Port of Safety’ of Catania, Sicily, where it is estimated that they will be handed over to the Italian Authorities tomorrow morning.
 
Last night, en route to Catania, a baby girl was born on board LÉ Eithne with Defence Forces Medics assisting in the delivery. Both mother and baby are healthy and well.

LÉ Eithne deployed to the Mediterranean on 23 May 2017 as part of the Government's response to the migrant crisis in Europe.

The role of the Irish Naval vessel is to provide a search and rescue capability and to undertake humanitarian rescue operations at sea in the Mediterranean. Assistance to persons in distress at sea is provided in accordance with the applicable provisions of international conventions governing search and rescue situations.
