60 Years Peacekeeping1958 - 2018

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Ireland's first Peacekeeping deployment in 1958.

Since then, Ireland have maintained the longest unbroken service on the front line of peace with over 70,000 individual tours of duty completed by the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

This year, we remember the 87 members of the Defence Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Peace.

21 Sept 2017 - Ministerial Review.

 

The Minister with Responsibility for Defence, Mr. Paul Kehoe, T.D., accompanied by the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Vice Admiral Mark Mellett DSM, will review the 131 men and women of the 56th Infantry Group ahead of their six month deployment to the Golan Heights as part of the United Nations Disengagement Observation Force (UNDOF).

The 56th Infantry Group will be the ninth Irish Defence Forces peacekeeping contingent to deploy to the Golan Heights. Drawn from many different Units across the Army and Air Corps the majority of the Group’s personnel are drawn from the 2nd Brigade Artillery Regiment, Custume Barracks, Athlone.

The Unit will form up in Burgess Park, Athlone at 10.30am. This will be followed by the blessing of the Unit Colours, the Minister's address and a ceremonial 'March Past'.
