Defence Forces Women's Soccer Team to play first International
The Defence Forces Women's Soccer team will host the French Armed Forces in their much awaited first International fixture in Salthill Devon grounds, Galway on Tuesday 09 March at 1430hrs.
The Defence Forces side was established three years ago and contested the FAI Junior Cup Final in September 2009. This is their first full Military International Game.
Some notable players on the Defence Forces side are Kildare County footballers Corporal Kim Turner, Gunner Emma Hannon, Gunner Lily Ray & Lieutenant Aoife Herbert, Cork Camogie All Star and All Ireland winner Corporal Gemma O Connor, Galway footballer Lieutenant Aine Gilmore and former Mayo all time great Captain Denise McDonagh.
Managed by Corporal Ben O Looney who brings a wealth of experience to the side having coached Tolka Rovers Women's team to back-to-back league and cup titles in 07 & 08. Assisted by Company Quarter Master Sergeant Casey McMullan and Company Quarter Master Sergeant Tony McCarthy who have both represented the Defence Forces in soccer with the former as assistant manager at CISM 2007 where the DF were the best placed European side.
The Women's team hope to emanate their male counterparts with qualification for CISM World Military Games in Brazil 2011.
