Defence Forces School of Music

Number one band on parade in Cathal Brugha barracksThe title Defence Forces School of Music (DFSM) is a Corps title that encompasses all elements of the Defence Forces’ music service. These elements are the Directorate, the Headquarters incorporating the Army No.1 Band and the School of Music, and two detached military bands, namely The Band of 1 Southern Brigade and The Band of 4 Western Brigade.

The role of the Defence Forces School of Music is to service the ceremonial and musical requirements of the State and the Defence Forces. In addition it provides a music service to the citizens of the country by way of the following schemes:

Public Recitals

A limited number of engagements usually performed in Public Parks and local authority spaces to which the general public has free access.

Festivals

Festivals may apply for the services of a band. The band may be provided without incurring an engagement fee - the festival organisers however are responsible for transport and subsistence costs. Under this scheme the general public must also have free access to the band’s performance.

Instrumentalist Engagements

Musicians or small ensembles (fanfare teams, quintets, pipers etc) may be hired on an individual basis provided that civilian musicians are not available to fulfil the engagement.

School Concerts

Military bands fulfil a limited number of School engagements per year. These concerts are educational in nature and are tailored to the requirements of primary and secondary school students.

All the above schemes are provided subject to the exigencies of the service.
