Army Equipment - Imaging Equipment

The Army use several types of night vision and thermal imaging equipment in various roles. They can be used in conjunction with weapons, aiding accuracy during low light conditions. They are also used by soldiers to aid observation tool during operations at night.

Night vision Monocular

Night Vision Goggles with helmet attachmentThe night vision monocular is a passive night vision device (x1 magnification), which amplifies the available light from the night sky. For close up viewing tasks during low light conditions a built in infrared emitting light (illuminator) source provides the necessary illumination. The monocular can be mounted on the users head or helmet. This allows the user hands free movement for other tasks.

Kite Sight

The Kite sight can be used with the Steyr assault rifle for additional accuracy during low light conditions. The Kite Sight is reliable and simple to use.

Midi-Kite Weapons Sight

The Midi-Kite Weapons Sight is a compact lightweight night vision sight for use as a portable long range surveillance and weapons sight. It offers x6 magnification and provides a sharp high resolution image for effective observation and target engagement at long range. The Midi-Kite sight is particularly suited for use on long range weapons and has been purchased by the Defence Forces for use on the GPMG, HMG and 84mm Carl Gustav Anti-Armour weapon.

Sophie Thermal Imager

The Sophie Hand Held Thermal is designed for target detection, reconnaissance and identification by viewing the scene observed, both by day and by night under poor climatic conditions. The imager can be used for reconnaissance of a target at a distance of more than 2.4km. It offers the observer the capability to observe in the thermal infra red spectrum which is invisible to the naked eye. The heat emitted by vehicles and personnel can be viewed with this equipment. The effectiveness of thermal imagers is not degraded as significantly as image intensifiers by light, smoke fog and rain.
